7 Ways to keep your house warm this winter
21st December 2020

What a year has been, are we right? Not to worry, as Christmas is just around the corner, ready to put you in the right festive and cheerful spirit. There are so many things to think about when the holidays approach, such as preparing delicious meals, attending special gatherings with family and friends, buying presents…But what about your home decor?

Having a stylish but beautifully decor can feel like a stressful task to do, but that’s ok! With plenty of time left to get festive, and with our step-by-step guide in how to decorate your home, you will indeed transform your house into a winter wonderland.

1. Choose your Christmas tree

The real centrepiece, a place where all your loved ones gather on Christmas Eve for hot chocolates, funny (and sometimes embarrassing) stories, and gift-sharing. Being the first port of call when decorating your home, the first question to ask is: artificial versus real? This comes down to your personal preference, but we do love the smell of a real tree, there is just something magical about it.

Tip: Depending on your home size, choose the right height, but don’t go for the typical symmetrical real tree you see everywhere around you if that’s your choice. Be creative, and pick a tree that is a little asymmetrical to give it a more natural and rustic feel.

2. Choose a colour scheme

This seems to be the hardest step for everyone, as there are so many options available that it can get overwhelming. However, gold, red and green, and silver and white are the classic choices for an elegant touch. When it comes to Christmas trends in 2020, the colour navy (more specifically, the Pantone colour classic blue seems to be the one), which can be beautifully paired with white, silver, gold, and even red.

3. Decorate

The best thing to do is to coordinate your tree decorations with the room in terms of colours, and there are no rules that say you can only add the typical garlands, snow globes, angels and candy canes in it. Get wild! Make it individual, unusual and interesting by adding elements from nature such as birds, butterflies, flowers and snowflakes. Then, add some light on it (what looks the cosiest and most inviting seems to be warm yellow), so make sure you wrap your tree well all around to make it glow.

Maybe spray some fake snow on the tree to make it look even more natural, sprinkle some pine essential oil for an extra touch, add a pretty little tree skirt underneath (white or red), and you’re ready for the grand finale, adding the topper. A trendy choice is an angel on top of your carefully-crafted Christmas tree, but ribbons, star shapes, hearts, snowflakes and personalised ceramic or wood ornaments are also a great choice.

Best tip? Decorate the Christmas tree with your family! It will make it even more special.

Lounge decorations

Add flowers, cheerful ornaments, stockings, colourful pillows, anything that inspires you. Go as big as you can to make a statement for your guests, but don’t forget to always opt for a natural and welcoming look overall.

Dining room decorations

Make the table the main focal point of the room. Place some big candles (gold especially) to make it shine, lay a white or red table cloth on it, add some festive napkins, Christmas crackers (our favourite), and anything else that comes to mind. What can really give a special touch to your dining table is a beautiful silver/golden place setting, they look elegant, celebratory and distinct.

Hallways decorations

To create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for your guests, add garlands around the front door (both inside and outside), hang some baubles and battery-operated lights on the stair railing, and place a nice welcoming mat right in front of your front door.

Window decorations

You can either choose subtle decorations or fully embrace the festive spirit by going big once again. Hang paper star lights in the windows, icicle string lights, and some cheerful stickers, but make sure to plug in your lights in the garage. That way, you will save going out in the cold to switch them on and off during the frosty evenings and mornings. Maybe stick some Christmas paintings and drawing made by your kids, that will surely put a smile on everyone’s faces!

If you feel like all these steps can be too much for you do to on your own, you are right! Delegate specific tasks for your entire family, and decorate your home this Christmas in a memorable way along with your loved ones.
